
Day 1 will focus on the techniques and explanations for successful throwing
Introduction and welcome to Butts Green Pottery.
Tour of the pottery. Health and Safety whilst in the pottery.
Explanation of the different types of clay from earthenware to porcelain.
Clay preparation for throwing: wedging.
Morning coffee/tea & homemade biscuits
Centering, and throwing small bowls.
Lunch
Throwing tall and upright pots.
Making larger bowls
Making lids for pots
Afternoon tea & homemade cake
Freestyle period for anything else students may wish to try or practice
Day 2 is a similar format but with the focus on the techniques for finishing thrown items, including
Joining pots, throwing larger pots, and altered forms
Various techniques for making and attaching handles
Turning of leather-
The teaching approach to such courses uses a combination of demonstrations, short discussion sessions and individual practice to help students progress and develop. A maximum group size of 5 allows students the individual attention they need so that each student can have one to one support so that their learning needs are addressed. We actively encourage student/tutor interaction for maximum enjoyment and learning.
Morning coffee/tea & homemade biscuits, lunch and afternoon tea/coffee and homemade cake are provided on both days. An example lunch would be as follows:
