The Pottery Studio

We have a well equipped teaching studio, in a delightful rural road south of Chelmsford.

The pottery studio consists of two main areas:

The Throwing Room

This rooms has 5 electric wheels of varying size, allowing several people to throw on the wheel at any one time, and usually allowing individuals to find one which suits their size and stature.  This room also contains the sink, including hot water supply!  The throwing room is equipped with a wood burning stove to keep everyone warm during the chilly winter months.

The Hand-Build Room

This room contains a large table/work area for hand-building and preparation of clay before throwing.  A wide variety of clay stocks are held, allowing students to experiment with different clays.  

A variety of underglazes, glazes, and over-glazes (e.g. Lustres) are held for experimentation with a variety of glaze effects, and there is a spray booth and compressor for safe spraying of glazes.

We have a range of kilns which are regularly used -

• Electric Oxidation Kilns: one very small, two small and one large
• Gas Reduction Kiln: one small/medium kiln
• Oil Drums for smoke firing
• Raku Kiln - hopefully coming soon!

We also have at least one pugmill to help us to recycle clay, and the usual raw materials for glazes and storage shelves for work in progress, etc.
